How it works

Six steps to your licence

From the outside a driving licence looks like a mountain of bureaucracy. In reality it is six steps in a fixed order – and we help directly with four of them.

  1. Register and get advice

    At the first appointment we work out which class suits you, whether automatic or manual makes more sense and what your timetable looks like. After that you know what to expect.

  2. Eye test and first aid course

    You need both for the application and get both independently of us. The eye test takes a few minutes at an optician; the first aid course comprises nine units and is usually done in a day.

  3. Apply to the authority

    The application goes to the licensing authority. Only once it is approved may you take a test. Because processing can take several weeks, it is best submitted right at the start.

    • The earlier the better – this is the most common time sink

    The application is almost always the reason things take longer than expected. Apply too late and you wait for a test date even with theory passed.

  4. Attend theory classes

    With us theory runs Monday to Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. For a first licence it is twelve double periods of basic material and two of class-specific material; for an extension correspondingly fewer.

    • You can join at any time, the topics do not build on each other
    • Berlin public holidays are accounted for in the schedule
    • The schedule shows the topic and type of every date

  5. Take driving lessons

    First the basics, where the handling has to become second nature, then the special drives. For class B that is five country road drives, four on the motorway and three at night.

  6. Pass your tests

    Theory first, then practical. After passing theory you have twelve months for the practical test. We only enter you once we are convinced it is solid – which saves you an unnecessary retake.

    • The two-year probationary period starts afterwards

What you need for the application

You should have these four things together before the application goes off. We check them with you first.

  • Valid ID card or passport with proof of registration
  • One biometric passport photo
  • Eye test certificate, no more than two years old
  • Certificate of attendance for a first aid course with nine units

How long does the whole thing take?

If you attend theory promptly and drive regularly, two to four months is typical. The biggest unknowns are the processing time of the application and the availability of test dates – neither of which is up to us.

FAQ

Questions about the process

Registration, eye test and first aid, application, theory, practice, tests. Theory classes and driving lessons can overlap – the application should go off as early as possible.

Yes, that is quite normal. Many people start their first lessons while the theory cycle is still running. You may only sit the practical test once theory has been passed, though.

Twelve months. If you do not manage the practical test in that time, you have to retake theory.

After a failed test there is a two-week waiting period before you can retake it. Afterwards we look together at what went wrong and practise exactly the points that came up in the test.
