What it involves
What goes into the application
The application goes to the licensing authority, which checks whether you are eligible and whether all the evidence is there. Only then may the testing organisation admit you to an exam at all.
Because processing takes time, it pays to apply early – ideally right at the start of your training rather than shortly before the theory test.
- Valid ID card or passport with proof of registration
- A current biometric passport photo
- Eye test certificate from an optician or ophthalmologist
- Certificate of attendance for a first aid course with nine units

Questions about the application
As early as possible, ideally when you register. Processing takes several weeks depending on workload – apply too late and you cannot sit the test even with theory passed.
At any optician or ophthalmologist. It takes a few minutes. The only thing that matters is that the certificate is no more than two years old when you apply.
At the well-known aid organisations and many private providers, often at weekends too. The course comprises nine units and usually takes a day.
Yes. With accompanied driving from 17 you apply correspondingly earlier – we will tell you exactly when that is possible in your case.
