The car licence

Class B lets you drive cars up to 3.5 tonnes with up to eight passenger seats. Germany’s most common licence – and the one we have the most dates in the calendar for.

What it covers

What you may drive with class B

Class B covers motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes maximum permitted mass with no more than eight seats in addition to the driver’s seat. Trailers up to 750 kilograms are always allowed; heavier trailers are permitted as long as the combination stays below 3.5 tonnes.

Classes AM and L are included, so you may also ride mopeds up to 45 km/h and drive slow tractors without doing anything extra.

The process

From registration to licence

The route is the same for everyone – only the pace is up to you.

  1. Registration

    We work out together whether automatic or manual suits you better and go through the documents.

  2. Eye test & first aid

    Eye test at an optician, first aid course with nine units. You can manage both in one day.

  3. Application

    We check your documents before they go to the licensing authority. That saves you queries and waiting time.

  4. Theory classes

    Twelve double periods of basic material and two of class-specific material. With us, Monday to Thursday.

  5. Theory test

    As soon as you have attended every topic and the authority gives the go-ahead, we book you in.

  6. Driving lessons

    First the basics, then the twelve special drives on country roads, motorway and at night.

What you need to bring

When you register we tell you exactly what is still missing in your case – and what you can save yourself.

  • Minimum age 18, or 17 for accompanied driving
  • Valid ID card or passport with proof of registration
  • Biometric passport photo
  • Eye test, no more than two years old
  • First aid course with nine units
  • Residence in Germany
Under 18?

With accompanied driving from 17 you can start training six months before your seventeenth birthday and take the test right after it.

FAQ

Questions about the car licence

Only the twelve special drives are prescribed by law: five on country roads, four on the motorway and three at night. How many practice lessons you need before that differs from person to person and depends on prior experience and pace. We tell you honestly where you stand rather than letting you drive unnecessarily.

If you are sure you will only ever drive automatic, pure automatic training is enough. If you want to keep your options open, B197 is the better route: you learn and take the test on automatic and may still drive manual cars.

Once you pass the theory test you have twelve months for the practical one. The application itself is also time-limited after the authority grants it – we keep an eye on the deadlines for you.

Yes, at any time. The topics do not build on each other. The schedule shows which topic is on which day and whether it is basic or class-specific material.
