Accompanied driving from 17
With accompanied driving you complete the full training and the test at 17. Until your eighteenth birthday you then drive with a registered accompanying person. Those who start this way are involved in significantly fewer accidents later.

How it works
How accompanied driving works
The training is identical to a normal class B licence – same theory classes, same special drives, same test. The difference comes afterwards: until your eighteenth birthday you may only drive with a registered accompanying person in the car.
That person does not intervene in the driving and is not a supervisor in the legal sense. They are there to stay calm and provide a second pair of eyes if needed. That is precisely where the safety gain comes from.
- Training can begin about six months before your seventeenth birthday
- The test is possible at the earliest one month before that birthday
- Until 18 you drive only with a registered accompanying person
- Several accompanying people are possible and sensible
Accompanying person
Who may accompany you
Every accompanying person is named on the test certificate. You can register several – parents, older siblings, grandparents.
- At least 30 years old
- Has held class B continuously for at least five years
- No more than one point in the driver fitness register
- Not under the influence of alcohol or drugs while accompanying
What happens on your eighteenth birthday?
You exchange the test certificate at the licensing authority for the proper card licence and drive on your own from then on. The probationary period simply continues.

Questions about accompanied driving
You can begin theory classes about six months before your seventeenth birthday. The theory test is possible at the earliest three months before, the practical test one month before.
No. You can register several accompanying people as long as each meets the requirements. That is practical, because the same person is not always free.
This is not a minor matter: expect a fine, a penalty point and, as a rule, withdrawal of the licence plus a retraining course. The licence is then only reissued at 18.
