What it is
The difference to pure automatic training
Anyone taking the test on an automatic vehicle normally gets code 78 entered and may then only drive automatics. B197 removes exactly that restriction.
To achieve it you complete at least ten additional lessons of 45 minutes on a manual car plus a final assessment drive of at least 15 minutes. Pass that and we confirm it – and your licence carries no restriction.

Yes, but without any restriction: code 197 is entered. It means you were tested on an automatic but may drive without limitation – unlike code 78, which ties you to automatics.
Ten lessons of 45 minutes are the legal minimum, plus the assessment drive. Whether that is enough for you is your instructor’s honest call – we only sign it off once you can genuinely handle a gearbox.
