Passing the theory test

Many people learn the questions by heart and still fail. That is almost always down to the same three things.

How the test works

The theory test takes place on a computer at the officially recognised testing organisation. You get questions from the official catalogue – basic material plus the class-specific part. Each question carries error points, weighted by importance at two, three, four or five points.

For a first class B licence you may have no more than ten error points. However, getting two five-point questions wrong means failing – even though that arithmetically adds up to ten.

You can sit the test in several languages. Talk to us if that would help.

The three most common mistakes

  • Only the app, never the classes: learning questions by heart without understanding the rule behind them fails as soon as the wording changes slightly.
  • Starting too late: the material needs repetition over several weeks. Three days beforehand is not enough for most people.
  • Clicking too fast: especially with multiple correct answers, one is often overlooked. Read every option through to the end.

What actually helps

From what works for our students:

  • Twenty minutes every day rather than three hours once at the weekend.
  • Mark the questions you got wrong and repeat those specifically instead of running through the whole catalogue again.
  • Ask in class as soon as something is unclear – that is what it is there for.
  • Save mock tests until the material has settled. Before that they only demotivate.
  • Take the video questions seriously: they can only be watched once and often cost unnecessary points.
Valid for twelve months

After passing theory you have twelve months for the practical test. Miss that window and you have to retake theory. So do not push the practical too far back.

If it did not work out

After a failed test there is a two-week waiting period. Use it: the test report shows which topic areas went wrong. Work through exactly those instead of learning everything again.

Failing is not a disaster and says nothing about your aptitude. What matters is not waiting weeks – the material fades quickly.

Questions about the theory material?

There is time for them in class – and if not, take it afterwards. We are happy to explain again.
